Silk From Sengkang


From generation to generation, people trained to be a weaver Sengkang. They weave silk yarn for weaving into a beautiful work. Working diligently, patiently, full of appreciation. Silk weaving was the main attraction is the town of Sengkang.

Sengkang is the capital of Wajo, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. This small town located about 280 kilometers north of Makassar. Public transportation is available from the City of Makassar.



Sengkang is a peaceful city. In some areas in this city, you will see a row of houses on stilts with a weaving activity in kolongnya. Taktak, tuktuk, tatak, tutuk, that's the sound of a traditional loom to accompany the days of Sengkang. For some, the sound was beautiful melody that is unforgettable.

Unlike other areas in Indonesia where young people begin to not care a beautiful legacy of their ancestors. In Sengkang, even the children of school age were still keen to learn weaving. As a girl, their hands are skilled at creating high-quality weaving.

First silk arranged one by one. Motive applications compiled using a special tool made from bamboo which is placed alternately. Then, the threads are arranged to follow the plot. There are two kinds of looms they use, the balls tennung (loom like houses) and welida (balida).

Smooth hands were stamped loom. Binding yarn strands into one. Looks complicated. But they do it cheerfully. For days they weave through strands of yarn into cloth is pretty long and smooth. They weave cloth gloves or material for clothing.

Weaving activity was carried out almost uniformly in all regions in Wajo. Among others in the Village District Sempange, Pasaka District Sabbangparu Village, and Village Laerung District. However, this location is the largest craft Sengkang.

In Sengkang there are many shops selling these woven works. The price of a sheet of silk woven throughout the five-meter range from 250 thousand rupiah to 400 thousand rupiah. In Makassar, Sengkang silk weaving can be purchased at the business area and central Panakkukang on Sombaopu souvenirs street.
